- Before placing them in water, trim about 2 cm off each stem at an angle with a clean knife.
- Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline: they cloud the water quickly.
- Change the water every two days and re-trim the stems slightly each time.
- Keep them away from direct sun, heat sources, drafts and ripening fruit.
- Gerberas: a few centimetres of water is enough; their stems soften if they sit too deep.
- Roses: if a head droops, re-trim the stem and let it rest in cool water for a few hours.
